THEORY OF OPERATION
THIS WORK PACKAGE COVERS:
Theory of Operation
OPERATION
a. Exhaust gases from the engine exhaust manifold enter the turbo through ports in the turbine housing.
b. Pressure and heat from the exhaust gases turn the turbine wheel. The gases then leave the turbine housing
through the exhaust outlet and are expelled through the vehicle exhaust system.
c.
The turbine wheel and the compressor wheel are mounted on a common rotor shaft. When the turbine wheel
spins, so does the compressor wheel.
d. The spinning compressor wheel draws air from the vehicle air filter into the compressor cover.
e. The air is compressed and blown out of the compressor cover through the outlet port, where it enters the
vehicle air induction system.
f.
The increased volume and density of air that is delivered to the engine cylinders causes a corresponding
increase in engine output power.
g. The bearing housing supports the rotor shaft and its sleeve bearings. Lubrication of bearings and other
turbocharger moving parts takes place in the bearing housing.
