f .  Normally there will be no deviation from the assigned level of maintenance.
I n case of operational necessity, maintenance functions assigned to a maintenance
level may, on a one-time basis and at the request of the lower maintenance level,
b e specifically authorized by the maintenance officer of the level of maintenance
t o which the function is assigned.  T h e special tools, equipment, etc. required
by the lower level of maintenance to perform this function will be furnished by
the maintenance level to which the function is assigned.  T h i s transfer of a main-
tenance function to a lower maintenance level does not relieve the higher mainte-
nance level of the responsibility of the function. The higher level of maintenance has the authority to deter-
mine:
(1) If the lower level is capable of performing the work.
(2) If the lower level will require assistance or technical supervision and on-site inspection.
(3) If the authorization will be granted.
g.  Organizational through depot maintenance of the US Army Electronics Command
equipment will be performed by designated US Army Electronics Command personnel.
h .  Changes to the MAC will be bases on continuing evaluation and analysis by
r e s p o n s i b l e technical personnel and on reports received from field activities.
B-3.  D e f i n i t i o n s .
a .  I n s p e c t .  To determine serviceability of an item by comparing its physical,
m e c h a n i c a l and electrical characteristics with established standards.
b.  T e s t .  T o verify serviceability and detect incipient failure by measuring
t h e mecchanial or electrical characteristics of an item and comparing those
c h a r a c t e r i s t i c s with prescribed standards.
c.  S e r v i c e .  T o clean, to preserve, to change, and to add fuel, lubricants,
c o o l i n g agents and air.
d.  Adjust.
T o rectify to the extent necessary to bring into proper operating
range.
e.  Aline.  T o adjust specified variable elements of an item to bring to
optimum performance.
f .  C a l i b r a t e .  To determine the corrections to be made in the readings of
instuments or test equipment used in precise measurement.  Consist of the com-
p a r i s o n of two instruments, one of which is a cerified standard of known accuracy,
t o detect and adjust any discrepancy in the accuracy of the in strument or test
equipment being compared with the certified standard.
g .  I n s t a l l .  To set up for use in an operational environment such as an
emplacement, s i t e or vehicle.
h . R e p l a c e .  T o replace unserviceable items with serviceable assemblies, sub-
a s s e m b l i e s or parts.
