STARTER MOTOR REPAIR (Sheet 5 of 11)
4. TEST ARMATURE (1) FOR SHORT
CIRCUITS.
NOTE
Short circuit in armature (1) will pull hacksaw
blade against armature core (2) and cause blade to
vibrate.
a. With growler (3) turned on, hold blade
about 1/32-inch (0.794 mm) away from
armature (1).
b. Turn armature (1) slowly. If blade is
pulled against core (2), assemble starter
motor (page 9-59) and replace.
5. INSPECT ARMATURE SHAFT SPLINES (4)
FOR DAMAGE, IF DAMAGED, ASSEMBLE
STARTER MOTOR (PAGE 9-59) AND
REPLACE.
6. INSPECT CONTACT SURFACE (5) FOR
ROUGH SURFACE, PITS, BURNS, OR
HARD CARBON OR OIL COAT, IF
DAMAGED, DO STEPS 7, 8, AND 9.
