i . R e p l a c e .  The act of substituting a serviceable like-type part,
subassembly, module (component or assembly) in a manner to allow the proper
f u n c t i o n i n g of an equipment/system.
j. Service. O p e r a t i o n s r e q u i r e d p e r i o d i c a l l y t o k e e p a n i t e m i n p r o p e r
o p e r a t i n g conditions, i.e. , to clean, preserve, d r a i n , p a i n t , o r t o r e p l e n i s h
fuel/lubricants/hydraulic fluids or compressed air supplies.
k .  T e s t .  To verify serviceability and to detect incipient failure by
m e a s u r i n g the mechanical or electrical characteristics of an item and comparing
those characteristics with prescribed standards.
l . S y m b o l s .  T h e uppercase letter placed in the appropriate column indicates
the lowest level at which that particular maintenance function is to be performed.
B - 3 . Explanation of Format.
Purpose and use of the format are as follows:
a. Column 1. G r o u p n u m b e r .  C o l u m n 1 lists group numbers, the purpose of
which is to match components, assemblies, subassemblies and modules with the next
h i g h e r assembly.
b . C o l u m n 2 .  F u n c t i o n a l g r o u p .  C o l u m n 2 lists the next higher assembly
group and the item names of components, assemblies, subassemblies and modules with-
i n the group for which maintenance is authorized.
c . C o l u m n 3 .  M a i n t e n a n c e  function.  C o l u m n 3 lists the twelve maintenance
f u n c t i o n s defined in B-2 above.  E a c h maintenance function required for an item
s h a l l be specified by the symbol among those listed in d below which indicates the
level responsible for the required maintenance.
d. Use of symbols.
T h e following symbols shall be used to prescribe work
