MAINTENANCE ALLOCATION CHART
B-1.  General.  The purpose of the maintenance allocation chart is to provide all
activities with authorized maintenance functions to be performed at each level of
maintenance.

d .  I n s p e c t .  T o determine the serviceability of an item by comparing its
physical, mechanical, and/or electrical characteristics with established standards
t h r o u g h  examination.
T h e act of emplacing, seating, or fixing into position an item,

o f the equipment/system.
f .  O v e r h a u l .  T h a t maintenance effort (service/action) necessary to restore
a n item to a completely serviceable/operational condition as prescribed by mainte-
n a n c e s t a n d a r d s ( e . g . , D M W R ) i n p e r t i n e n t t e c h n i c a l p u b l i c a t i o n s .  O v e r h a u l is
n o r m a l l y the highest degree of maintenance performed by the Army.

g . Rebuild. C o n s i s t s o f t h o s e s e r v i c e s / a c t i o n s n e c e s s a r y f o r t h e r e s t o r a -
tion of unserviceable equipment to a like-new condition in accordance with original
m a n u f a c t u r i n g  standards.
R e b u i l d is the highest degree of materiel maintenance
a p p l i e d to Army equipment.
T h e rebuild operation includes the act of returning to
z e r o those age measurements (hours, miles, etc.) considered in classifying Army
equipment/components.
h. Repair.  The application of maintenance services (inspect, test, service,
adjust, align, calibrate, replace) or other maintenance actions (welding, grinding,
riveting, straightening, facing, remachining, or resurfacing) to restore service-
ability to an item by correcting specific damage, fault, malfunction, or failure
i n a part, subassembly, module/component/assembly, end item or system.
